CO2 Shell Dragster Tutorials

Welcome to our SOLIDWORKS 2011 and Mastercam X5 CO2 Shell Dragster Tutorials. We use SOLIDWORKS 2011 to design our cars and Mastercam X5 to create CNC toolpaths to cut the car body. The following tutorials with the PDF icon are available for viewing. Download the free reader from Adobe.

The new 2011 CO2 Shell Car Tutorials include Mate References on the cylindrical parts. The new concentric and center plane Mate References makes the often challenging Assembly a "snap".

Table of Contents

Part   1. Blank. Units are all metric. Now includes cylindrical and center plane Mate References. This tutorial is the same as the Rail Car blank.

  3. SW to MCX5. In this New tutorial using HST toolpaths you open your SW body file in Mastercam X5. In Mastercam X5 you rotate solid body into the correct Mastercam XY axis, create a wireframe centered around the solid and draw containment. Also, you create new WCS views for toolplanes.

  4. New MCX5 HST toolpaths to cut shell car body from balsa blank: 1) Bottom shell wheel cutouts using very cool rough Area Clearance deep plunge Trochoidal elliptical cuts and finish Raster. 2) Cut body left side using finish Scallop toolpath. 3) Mirror left cut to right side cut.
Part   5. Front Wheel GT-F. Now with cylindrical Mate Reference.
Part   6. Rear Wheel GT-R. Now with cylindrical Mate Reference.
Part   7. Front and Rear Axles. Now with cylindrical and center plane Mate References.
Part   8. Front and Rear Spacers. Includes cylindrical and center plane Mate References.
Part   9. Washer. Now with cylindrical Mate Reference.
Assembly   10. Assembly. Now all cylindrical parts "snap in" using Mate References.
Drawing   11. Drawing. 11” by 17” paper.
Part   12. Eye Screw with Threads and Mates. It is not recommended to model threads, but they are so cool.
Part   13. Cartridge with Mates.

  16. Analyze in Wind Tunnel. Analyze assembly design using Flow Simulation and create animation of flow trajectories. Our best was 12.72 drag! Can you design car with less drag?
Part   17. Axle Retainer.
Part   18. E-Clip.
Part   19. Hair Pin Clip.
CAMWorks   20. CAMWorks Toolpaths. Bottom cut with Left cut and Right cut toolpaths across the X axis all within SolidWorks.

  21. Mastercam X5 for SolidWorks Toolpaths. Start with rotating solid body into the correct Mastercam XY toolplanes to cut car from balsa blank. Next, create bottom cut shells toolpath using very cool Area Clearance deep plunge Trochoidal elliptical cuts. Create Side cuts with left cut finish Scallop toolpath and mirror to right cut all within SolidWorks.
Here are 2015, 2012 and 2010 tutorials. 2015 is recommended.
